Maybe the MC wasn't sent to the past, but barely survived the explosion and was caught in the reconstruction of the world as a "shadow world" where the "objective" is to avoid mankind's destruction, simply being used as material to rebuild his past self as he was just available to be reused.

So your adventure is also a history test, if you fail you die and the commoners aren’t given a proper education so the deck is stacked against them. I see why this world was doomed.

On a speculation note, what if this is a new part of the shadow world and since he is trying to keep the world from ending this time he fails because it was supposed to end.
