Y'know, I'm not surprised about it being a stage such as that, but I am confused that HE was surprised- didn't he already go through this? Is the shadow world specifically different encounters even if you're redoing the past? He said this was the specific one he got a tool from before, so you'd think he'd have expected the interior.

Either way, I'm in favor of it being a variety of challenges and little reality bubbles.

i think that the quest is to feed his teammates. since the quest says that if they enjoy the meal then it will be beneficial or if they don't it will lead to a disadvantage.
or it could be him feeding important people that can help them later on in the quest.
