Because he can't prove his innocence and he knew it. That's why he tried to discredit the accuser. It's a common tactic IRL too, and annoyingly it sometimes work because people don't like to think.

Has to be for what she started at the end of the chapter, turning the incest step-siblings against each other. Because this chapter didn't do anything other than frustrate them, and technically give them chances to make better cover stories if she ever plans on using any of these exact pieces of evidence in public to actually expose them.
