Ooooohhhh.
So this is a case of "The Contracted Spirit Cannot Disobey Their Master".

Also, friendly reminder to people saying this shit makes no sense: Lunaria just broke down the whole damn thing in just a few pages of internal monologue. That being that since the formerly fictional setting is now as close to real life as possible, the other characters cannot be two-dimensional cardboard cutouts. They need to have things like motive for doing what they do. There needs to be reasons for the choices they make, even if they're fucking shitty reasons that make them garbage-level human beings.

With all of that said...

It's obvious that there's still some higher power pulling the strings - something that created the system in which Lunaria is forced to make choices between two mutually exclusive choices at key moments in the "Story".

That's gonna be the big make-or-break for this story - if the author/mangaka reveals what this power is and why it's doing it.

Not revealing is gonna be a copout. It's the easy way of doing it since it pretty much translates to "Alien Space Bats Did It For Reasons", and not a trope that I feel writers should resort to.

Revealing and having it turn out that the higher power is doing it all for their own amusement... Slightly better, but still pretty cheap as far as writing goes.

Revealing and having it be that the higher power needed someone to fix things probably won't fly unless they come up with a justification for railroading Lunaria through all those decision points.

Last item on the agenda here: the most recent decision being put before Lunaria.

Funny thing about that.

It's not telling us which choice has a winning condition.

The choices being offered are...
- Keep fighting and die
and...
- Summon the Demon Lord and destroy the Capitol

Also, something else to take note of is that the second choice of summoning the Demon Lord only says that the Capitol will be destroyed. It doesn't say anything about the rest of the world being involved in that destruction. Which tells me that this choice is gonna be like when the Autobots and Decepticons duke it out in the middle of a city and pretty much trash everything.

So yeah. No idea which one is gonna be the choice that "wins" here. Though if we go by the last volume cover, I think we know what's gonna happen next.

Buckle-up, folks. Shit's about to get messy. And I am fucking here for it.

So, the options are either "die" or "calling for help and let somebody else to deal with it"?

Nah fam. This Lunaria won't do that. Even if the nuclear option looks mighty tempting right now...

Is it? Literally sold the entire premise of the story through having a protagonist blow through opposition as a "super-dreadnought" and "cheat villainess". I can understand making the saintess a challenge, but pulling bullshit after bullshit to make her an invincible final boss needing YET another twist for the protag to win... That's Naruto (specifically, the 4th shinobi war arc) levels of shitty writing. There was no need for this after a protracted 'trial' like the one we slogged through.

So, some of my thoughts:

  • There's the potential that The Demon Lord has never once actually been "evil". Common plot point, but given what we've seen so far it would have needed far better explanation to truly be a well-received outcome this far.
  • In a similar vein to the "Corrupted Holy Beast", the "Demon Lord" could simply be another avatar or arbiter of natural forces, drawn to the strong/talented/exceptional. "Where a God of Light exists, so too must a God of Darkness" and all that.
  • This could be a "final choice" type situation, where dying is preferable to the alternative--playing into the original plot of the Story. Standing on her own against fate and somehow cheating the already weighted dice.
  • This could truly be Axe-kun ripping off the shirt of this plot to get to the teats they don't deserve, which is an early ending.
I'm not keen on spoiling myself for the medium I've chosen, which is to read manga scans--what we see next hopefully won't disappoint with whatever direction is chosen.
