Man, I used to think Shimamura was the one with the bigger issues, but...this one was all Adachi.
I thought it was clear Adachi has big issues from that rant she made after the festival? Shimamura was never that bad.
The "girlfriend" thing make Shimamura's calm soul became lowkey insane lol

Shimamura before:
"Hmm.. street, tree, school, friend, mom, dog"

Shimamura now:
"Hmm... girlfriend, girlfriend, Adachi, girlfriend, girlfriend, girlfriend, society, girlfriend, Adachi"
We live in a society...

Adachi's issues until now have basically been social awkwardness, maybe some bipolar tendencies...it just seems like she has a lot of anxiety about social interactions, and what she feels can come pouring out at once. But that's the sort of thing that gets better with experience, which she simply lacked but would inevitably gain.

Shimamura on the other hand has seemed almost unrelatable as a human being. Like a startling lack of both empathy and emotion. She seemed like she had way bigger and deeper issues.

But now we see Shimamura doing things not because she doesn't care one way or another, but because she's thinking about what would actually make Adachi happy. Meanwhile, Adachi's response is beyond unreasonable and shows an incredible level of insecurity.

So that's why I'm saying this is the first time (since we've seen the depth of Shimamura's internal thoughts at least) that it comes across as Adachi having the bigger issues.

Reminder that Adachi and Shimamura are like sixteen years old, and this is a coming of age story. In my opinion, the whole point of the story is that they’re figuring life out and growing together. Shimamura considers this new relationship to be an adventure and she’s onboard for all the experiences it has to offer. Adachi is just a typical anxious socially awkward teen who overreacts and overcompensates because she hasn’t yet figured out where the line is. Shimamura isn’t some cold and unfeeling robot, she just doesn’t know what she feels yet and is testing things out. For example, trying to find ways to have a special relationship with Adachi by calling each other by their first names and holding hands. Even the jealousy is part of this, she understands why Adachi feels the way she does, but rather than throw the whole relationship away, she is figuring out ways for Adachi to not feel jealous by having special things only the two of them do.

Shimamura treats adachi like a cute puzzle. Her feelings might not ever be as, uh, heavy as adachi's but you can tell that she's grown very fond of observing and discovering how her strange little mind works.

It feels a little lopsided now but weirdly this is the kind of relationship dynamic you can see working as they age. Like I can picture them as old ladies still doing this same routine and neither one growing tired of it if that makes sense?

From my perspective, the debate about which one of them is more dysfunctional isn't relevant, because they both have their own issues to work through. They've been getting better as time goes on, and their relationship has survived all of the hurdles so far. I can relate to both characters, so it seems weird when someone picks favorites based on relatability. They're both just wonderfully imperfect, their antics warm my heart.
