every time I look at this book/manga, I cry a bit inside with what the author has done....

the book/manga is based on the idea that the protagonist has two bodies, a boy and a girl, and then the first thing the author does, is throw away the interesting protagonist, and basically split them into two people who have telepathy, and also the misunderstanding thing....

Oh, I though you were talking about something other than the amazing example of stupid writing this story ended up as. I agree with what you said and even pointed out how they stopped being one person to be two personalities with one mind thing.
If it is just that then the answer is simple: It is selling or he has a contract to end at least one season.
