This may well be a red herring harem-wise....

She's a catgirl.. And he posesses the ultimate Nap Time Pillow....
She doesn't know that yet.
There is that trope is that beastkin value strength and she shot him that interested glance after his entrance exam performance. She might be seeking out a strong mate.

What she also has yet to learn is that he doesn't discriminate against beastkin like others in this country, is an avid fluff lover, and will gladly indulge her with headpats!
I see no way this doesn't work out.
He already has the doggy girl, now a cat is fine too. (and a bunny)

You mentioned Harry Potter without noting that the title character's surname is an occupational surname.
That's because I was focusing on names that aren't just "Dr Doctor James Willard" levels of on the nose. There's a bit of amusement (whether light or dark) of a banker named Daddy Warbucks, but Mr Michael Moneybags is a bit TOO on the nose. Plus, Harry isn't a potter despite being a Potter, so why bother mentioning it? :salute:

That said, I've got some truly heinous names I've created for OCs in a story I've never quite gotten to work. It's not Komi can't Communicate levels of on the nose (I'm looking at you, Osana Najimi the "Childhood Friend/Osananajimi"), but they're pretty bad. I'll edit this with a couple examples if I can find the right document.

Edit: Found it! The two main characters of a RomCom story I started planning a decade ago are named Kensaku Kirakuna (can be read as Carefree Search or Simple Plan) and Yakudō Ai (Dynamic Love) respectively. There's also side characters named Seishin Akimashita (Spirit Vacancy) who is a bumbling, forgetful hotel manager and Nōgyō Sewanin (Agriculture Caretaker), a farming gal who the hotel manager is in love with (basically think of Dr Tofu from Ranma ½ when dealing with Kasumi).

Actually, looking back, I think I've gotta forgive Komi can't Communicate; the names might be on the nose, but at least the author used their own language rather than being a cringe weeb like me, lmfao

What does Dan get out of this challenge though? I don't think it helps with becoming a knight so i guess he just wants to be able to say he beat him.
I guess it's because the family he serves and Luke's family don't like each other so he fells like he has to.

Usually in games the protagonist usually gets fucked with 1st to cement the antagonistic relationship, this time he's just acting like a bitch.
I guess the antagonistic relationship is just from the fact that the family he serves is enemies with the other family.

The game MC challenging MC the second they are available is def villain material. If that was in the game no way you are seen as a great character.
to be fair, he literally just met MC and all he knows about him are that he is a spoiled rich kid, he thinks it will be an easy victory so he wants to fight him and get a win before someone else does

I wasn't expecting Lynshen to be tanned, I figured she'd look more like a princess knight.

Bro the fact you can’t refuse is kinda fucked like why would I fight this lower ranked person when there is no benefit to me??? Like you could get challenged everyday
There is benefit for you - keeping your rank. System is designed that you have to actively defend it. I guess author wanted to implement dueling.
IMO even in this scenario (where even MC admits it's a game system designed to be lenient to the losing challenger), there should be some additional rules (what i can think of immediately is being able to challenge only people slightly ahead of you), and some real drawbacks from losing (hell even possibility of losing life could work here - you'll think twice about challenging someone strong just because you can if he can spill your guts in the arena for that just because he can).

this is a game world, so by game logic, he gains XP for winning.

True, this chapter did introduce a stat screen with a level. Prior to that, we hadn't seen any numerical values nor talk about experience points; I mean, you can see from Luke's stat screen that he hasn't defeated any monsters and only got to where he currently is through training and studying. Meanwhile, Dan has apparently been battling monsters since he was little.

In any case, since Dan basically immediately challenged Luke without doing any research, and this is essentially the first time stats are displayed, he's not doing it to gain experience points because he shouldn't know about that yet (well, maybe he knows intuitively from experience?).

I also wonder, you might get experience points from defeating monsters, but does that also work for duels? After all, you aren't killing in a duel.

Well, I guess we'll see. Next chapter should enlighten us.

Anyone know how many manga books are out if this series of if it's only the one? Defintely a promising series and would love to keep reading.

My first thought: Why the fuq is the nigh-immortal elf the assistant professor?
Then again, I can't hold it against a guy who JoJo poses over a watch.

My second thought: Some muthafuckas always trying to ice skate up hill...
Looks like the 'hero' is going to get a wake up call.

You! Person I've never met! My daddy hates your daddy! Fight me!
(Do you bite your thumb at me, sir...?!?!)

I would absolutely follow the earlier suggestion of accept duel, concede duel, and never worry about duelling this shithead again.
He's plainly trying to make it personal, as he won't be changing classes, and he's only going up maybe 3 ranks; and he won't keep that ranking by the next test cycle! All of which means... he's not even worth my time.

Hopefully it isn't some kind of dumb shit where his "attendant" shit-talks him into the duel... or, even worse, where he suddenly gives a shit about the "family" who has been trying to fucking murder him, for no discernible reason.
Because that would truly be stupid af.

Lower ranked students can bother higher ranked students without consequence. Higher ranked students risk losing everything and they can't opt out.

The only solution is to use the match as an opportunity to humiliate and traumatize your challenger so badly that others will be too scared to try. Act like a true villain that no-one dares to fight.

Also, If he creates the impression that challenging [#2] Luke is not only more dangerous, but also less likely to succeed than challenging [#1] Princess, then he can divert the ones who are brave enough her way as they'll essentially be able to surpass him in rank with far less difficulty if they can defeat her instead - especially when they eventually realize that he's too lazy to fight her for the #1 spot despite being stronger.
But there’s a loophole: the rule says that the person being challenged cannot refuse, and the fight only begins once he accepts, but it doesn’t specify any deadline or consequences if he never accepts. Theoretically, he could just avoid accepting until the end of school

I agree with the others that there's no benefit to the higher ranked student to these take these challenge. Unless they add some details here the Challenged is incentivized to Ender's Game challengers, i.e. win the first battle so brutally that a second is never attempted. The battles starting only when the Challenged accepts and there being leeway on time to accept are good since it puts the time and place in their control. Gives them time to study their opponent instead of going in blind when the Challenger likely knows a lot about them. Also prevents them from being overwhelmed with challenges.

The 5 loss challenge limit is basically just set dressing since Luke is OP and will never lose unless he chooses to lose so if it gets applied it will be to some side character. If Luke was not OP then it would be a good addition since it would add stakes but it's meaningless here.

For reference, Luke's rankings are:
Overall rank: 2
Practical rank: 10
Studies rank: 5
Magic rank: 2

All shown ranks shown below, if they start revealing more ranks maybe I'll keep an updated list but I imagine it won't really expand by more than a handful of characters. I think it would've been better to list more people initially to flesh out the world building.

Overall ranking
1. Erina, First Princess
2. Luke, MC

Practical ranking
1. Ruby, Cat girl no information
10. Luke, MC

Studies ranking
1. Mirril, Commoner
5. Luke, MC

Magic ranking:
1. Libera, magic maniac, probable 3rd wife
2. Luke, MC

I wonder how their grading/ ranking system works. Because it obvously cant be just the average out of the three disciplines

Higher-ranked students are forced to defend against anyone below them, while challengers risk nothing. This encourages harassment, discourages improvement, and rewards luck or manipulation over actual skill.

Are they in an active war or something? Why would any school ever use this stupid system? Why is in a school, fighting more important then learning? And how can this system allow this school to be a dating simulator?

I REALLY like the way this one has been developing. It’s quite low key concerning the over-poweredness of the protag and very good at giving the main and supporting characters great designs.

Loving his dynamic with the main girls. Syrup is a gift from the heavens. And the new magic mania girl is going to be nice and lively to have around.

I’m really curious about the next chapter. He could either accept the loss without fighting, or absolutely destroy the original MC. The former being more likely.

Thanks so much for the translation!! This one is one of my favorites!
