I am curious about the end game though. Isn’t it usual for the villainess’s house to come to ruin as well? Are they going to just come out in the end and say “Psyched! All of those things were just acting!”?

The premise is kinda non-sensical. Why would you get yourself killed just for the whims of an old romance-story loving idiot? Under normal circumstances, there is no commoner girl that is ever suitable to be a queen given her lack of education and suitability. There's a pretty clear line between a good and bad villainess story. And this one, while novel, isn't in the good category.
