The father is so cornered for cash just for his daughter's medical bill, and now that someone show him that he can get enough money the "easier" way? yeah ofc he will grab it, he'd grab at anything at that point.

If say we take this to irl modern day, no matter what you say he also wouldn't think much about it until his child is cured and healthy again, then the guilt will kick in later and he will get depression, then we get to potential suicide.

Moving back the only reason he agree to side with MC at all was because he got that deal, MC shows him the way out, the guilt would still kick in of course, but at least with MC's house they can track back the children, as for the deceased child they can talk to the family involved and give supports, it sucks but it is what it is, things aint all black and white man.

The problem is, the crime is not a petty crime such as thief or some shit, he include a kidnapping and murder i can tolerate if it's just thief but murder someone child nuh uh, even when my child got sick i can't imagine doing that, the furthest i can do is stealing something.

I never justify kidnapping children to make some living or pay some medicine, if you do that you can't argue about saving your children anymore cuz someone child goes missing because of you, what's make you different from cartel or CIA you both doing something that inhuman

As for pardoning dad...I think he's basically taking the brunt of his punishment right now. They could probably still lock him up or sentence him to labor for a year while his family is taken care of. they just kidnapped 2 noble kids and they escaped, yet they waste time punishing a traitor when a literal super human battalion is on they way for their heads.

originally its just a few men. and the traitor stay back to hold them off but chickened out.
leaving them to catch up to the 2 kids.

not every life is equal and worth the same, especially in setting like that. life of a local leader's son and one of military commander's daughter would be worth MUCH more than some slum kids.

i honestly think this will be the case to make him more sympathetic (to both readers and adults in universe), as even if we got MC swearing on his name that he'd be spared, i don't think adults would really bother with honoring that.
dude doing suicide last stand? i respect that. the fact that he got tortured later instead of just being killed so other bandits can flee - i guess we need him alive and somewhat well so we get his daughter as a character later on, so might as well make him pay somewhat and make readers like him even more.



also jail wasn't really used as punishment by itself, especially in situations like these. think political prisoners/prisoners of war/maybe some debtors. for normal criminals it was just to briefly hold them somewhere before the extraction of testimony
/trial/punishment. x years of jail as a sentence is relatively modern invention.
