If you remember, their mother didn't want to teach them magic as it is the mage's code not to start teaching until 10 years old. Alot of magic is censored, they spend 5 chpts trying to convince her to teach them early, bro. Hence, technically, the kids weren't really allowed to learn any proper magic but only learned magic manipulation, emission, and sensing.

It's like teaching engineering without access to any dangerous tools
