I appreciate leaving the packaging intact and adding a TL note instead.
It retains some of the fidelity of this being a Japanese comic, which I do think is important.

Aoi remains my favorite character. I hope we get more of her backstory sooner than later.

It's a shame Ami doesn't care enough to learn why they're suddenly outside the service area, but I also can't imagine she'd care about the answer either, so.
I do look forward to seeing how long it takes for her to develop some form of empathy, though.

Thank you for your continued work on this series.

Ya got some damn timing man, was just about to call it a day, if not for "saving you" I would've waited next week to read this

I suppose mr pervert man made it so shed pose a challenge but always lose, can't hold em, that's kinda smart tailoring your sex bot to always play on your level

Grabbing the arms of strangers is definitely... A business practice I suppose

Have a nice day

That blank deadpan expression of hers, I've never seen a customer service smile used so reliably as a punchline before

I am unsure about replacingly translating 2D text. I totally understand the opposition and agree with it for 3D text—you are actually changing the world if you translate it—but for (depthless) 2D text, I feel like it's fine? It is physical, but in the smallest way, and it basicly never matters. We understand that the words are Japanese and that it's just preferable to annotation. Altho, sometimes Japanese labels are in English, and then you lose that distinction by translating the ones that aren't (unless you oppositely annotate them, which I also dislike). Also, how far does this go? If there's a handwritten letter that you see the person write, are you still replacingly translating that? That seems too far if you're making it look like the characters are writing English, right? But where's the line then? I guess active-handwrittenness is a distinguishable line, and that's probably where I softly fall as of now. Also with anime, this is barely a question because replacing things is so much more work so notation basicly wins by default. Anyway, all of that is to say I would've written over the label but I don't hate that you didn't.

And then as for adding cursing, I'm the more foreignizational one on this front. I just don't think it's necessary.

TBH, after thinking on it more I'm kinda with you? I think it's a vibes-based thing and it's impossible to strictly define where it's appropriate and where it isn't. The shopping street sign from a few chapters ago? Obviously should be left in Japanese. Text messages on a phone? Obviously should be translated. Everything in between falls under various shades of grey where it's hard to establish a consistent guideline. Your point about losing the distinction between Japanese and English when the label has both is something I'm always thinking about too - like because I haven't been translating in-world text (usually) the reader knows that the cake had "Merry Christmas" on it in English in the original. But is that worth the loss of clarity and broken flow from not translating other stuff? Who knows.

Also I would totally translate stuff like a handwritten letter, because you can't fit all that in a TL note. That's an important part of the equation as well.

Regardless though my main reason for not translating it is that "doubanjiang" really doesn't want to fit in that form factor. If I was to translate the label it would probably be in the form of text alongside the original like this:

As for the cursing, I tend to agree and if I ever do a final pass over this series with corrections I may retranslate that. I'm not happy with that last page in general, both the SFX and Ami's dialogue are very much "good enough I've been thinking about this for an hour now time to move on" choices.

God this is too relateable. Sometimes you find something perfect and sometimes you just have to move on.

Oh yeah a space consideration is reasonable too. Altho did you see how VIZ handled I Want To End This “I Love You” Game Chapter 60? (If you didn't, it involves a long letter that is not cleanly viewable.) They didn't redraw or annotate the letter and just put a huge set of translation notes at the end of the chapter. But then the full letter was released cleanly as its own bonus chapter, and they did text replace for that. This is a simulpubbed translation and they often go back and redraw stuff for the vol release, so they'll probably do that in this case, but I thought it was a funny way of handling it because normally officials are more elegant, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Curious to see the final result.

Just took a look at it (was reading that series for a while but fell off of it after the... really bad pocky game > sports festival arc, but it looks like things got back on track) and yeah I can't say I blame them considering how much redrawing that letter would entail. That's a rock and a hard place situation if I ever saw one.

Thankfully the highlights are read out loud so the reader doesn't need to see the TL of the whole letter right away. The problems start arising when the reader is expected to have read the letter. In that case you basically have to TL in place, no reader will want to flip back and forth to a huge TL note at the back to understand the story!

Yeah I thought the Sports Festival Arc basicly sucked and the infrequency of the chapters because of the Doumoto's health issues didn't help. That said I never really loved the series. I was a huge HUGE fan of Necromance, and the series has just never livved up in my eyes. However, I am delighted by its success because one of Doumoto's dreams was getting an anime and now hopefully with that anime money she can afford to independently publish an end to Necromance as she expressed a desire to do in the final volume's note.

Interesting, I never looked at her previous works. I might read through that, although knowing ahead of time it hasn't been finished properly kinda sucks. Hopefully it gets a real ending!
