It's a protest story. It's pretty much the only way a Chinese dude can protest the government, especially local, and it's still extremely risky. That's why it's more serious than it might seem.

Probably the only reason he got away with it is that it's mostly criticism of an earlier government.

Rereading time! I don't really know what expectation I have the first time I pick this up but this is truly a hidden gem. I remember cheering so hard for Ming because really, he's such a hardworking kid I feel embarrassed of my past self. Hua is also a very inspiring character, tho her personality is kinda way past her age sometimes. The classroom is basically a little kingdom of children. The story atmosphere is a bit heavy, and the class conflict definitely has some not so subtle underlying message.

This story captures the ugly dystopian feeling of 1990s China. Though it was even worse before then it have changed much since, except for the increase in material wealth.

@gormadoc China hasn't really changed much since then. The only difference now is that the kids have smartphones. The poor rural village areas haven't changed at all though, since the 1950's. Even the politics of China still hasn't changed much. If anything, It think its become more gentrified and aristocratic, where political power is inherited instead of voted (well, they don't have a democracy, so its obvious), but the power is still in the rich. I don't know why they still call themselves the Chinese communist party, when they are far from it...
