This is a minor point, hardly worth mentioning in all this, but: A spear will be a better weapon than a sword, not just for the untrained to use like the man implied, but in general.

Some people seem to confuse "using a sword takes skill and a spear is easy" to also mean "but once sufficiently trained in both, the sword is better". That's not how it works. This isn't a video game; the weapons aren't balanced. A skilled fighter can just use the extra reach of the spear even better.

Only, even historically, no one is really impressed by someone being able to use a spear, since "even commoners can afford/use them". They're just not... well, cool.

In war, swords are largely backup weapons. They're sidearms. They're really useful for a weapon of their weight and size, but that's it.

In most cases, spears are Just Better. The only place they markedly don't shine is somewhere where their length is awkward (e.g. in cramped quarters indoors)

With a few specific exceptions, most cultures you might imagine using predominantly swords—including medieval knights, samurai, whatever—for most of history used primarily spears (or other long polearms) and bows in battle, with swords as backup weapons. Swords mostly just became cemented in the imagery associated with those periods because they were noble status symbols afterwards, outside the battlefield.

Think of how, if you think of a "gun", most of us first think of a handgun. That's roughly what a sword is, in terms of how prominent it is in iconography—the first thing you think of, and a thing you'd carry around with you for personal defence, and certainly a weapon a soldier would carry, but not generally what you'd pull out first in battle.

(Of course this is all fantasy nonsense where MC is carrying a sword that'd be physically impossible to wield with his frame without... well, magic. So feel free to ignore my little rant. Swords can be better in this universe for whatever reason the author wants to make up, really.)
