It seems all the civilians survived. That was quite the magic trick. They sure were lucky to have Almark be there.

I'm still stunned at how useless the guards were, but I guess I'll just think of it as pitting a donut filled policeman against a navy seal or something.

They've survived their current situation, but they're all unguarded now (besides the presence of Almark). So they're going to need to hire new guards and that's an opportunity for spies to slip in. Well, if that does happen, Almark is unlikely to be involved as they'll all be back to school. It's more something Wendy's family will have to deal with.

I figured it had to be something. Almark wouldn't have let all the civilians die. Or perhaps Wendy wouldn't have let Almark let them die.

At the very least, he would have given them tasks that gave them a fighting chance and utilized them as more than fodder.

Yeah, they are meant to be a show of force, security theater. Or to handle common thieves and ruffians. Watch for intruders. And these mercs are the real deal.

I kinda had a hunch that the corpses are either props or they pretended to be ones for an ambush, then dismissed it because “there is no way they could recreate the smell of blood, and the mercs wouldn’t miss it” but they somehow created the sensation so real, even Almark got pulled back to the north.

yeah i was shocked, i thought she was an illusion but blood came and i assume she surely perish but found it strange that, almark didn't reacted.

The guards were useless. Sending Almark to protect everyone was more effective because he's the best.
