Gonna be honest, I've not seen a manga with such an overwhelming amount of speech bubbles and generally as much text, and I find it super off-putting and exhausting to read...

This has the breath of really old anime, in that -- it has a really strong pilot episode, the premise seems cool and the world building feels genuine and well thought-of -- and then, never-ending school arc that episodically centers on a different character here and there, i.e: FILLERS. This story currently runs on bloody fillers.

What I wanted from this "school arc", was for Almark to expand his understanding of societal hierarchies, how cities run, how magic is used to elevate society and make it run, etc...Like how we got a taste of how the North runs, and the philosophy one needs to adapt in order to survive there (albeit we still know jackshit about the north to a disappointing degree).
That WAS the whole point of Almark going to the academy, right? He took on himself the role of solving the North Issue, implied by developing it.

Instead, every episode shows us a snippet of how Almark and Friend solved their respective mystery, this time around! meh.
That being said, I still think this story is worth following, maybe it'll flip around when the filler will end.

Couldn't say it any better myself. The fight part actually was a bit interesting and I thought it would lead to some new revelations about things, but then it's back to school bullshit. I am way too old to care about school slice of life bullshit anymore. A school arc in a series should be the foundations of an area that the mc then branches out from and does things that are not school related but finds people their age.

I don't like it and I don't want to explain deeply on some issues I have with the manga almark and the whole story and the side characters and I think many people who read manga can notice some weird stuff going on in the story. Art good the fantasy the world it's good it has potential but still feels like something missing maybe I'm not that happy with the magic they are using the art it's not flashy maybe cause I'm used with shounen type magic wich is flashy. Second the whole issue with north south north south was used so much in the start and still I don't know anything feels like many volumes in the future are gonna be almark in north probably interacting with the war. Third why I still remember Julia name that looked wow I'm shipping almark with Julia the headmaster is a trash magician his from a different era of peacefully magic almark can probably do way more he has potential for scout stamina and magic swordsman and his very cunning the way he fought the noble chapter. Art good translation good but yeah south sucks guys the northern people can smack the southern birches way too weak remember the gate guard was tired of carrying a sword of a simple mercenary child. Almark is from the words of headmaster very talented person with magic and inner talents but it's sad how such a famous academy it's making training of swords with weights for small kids and almark pointed how bad it is breaking easily so south kinda sucks good kind people but unprepared for war 100 year peace I think it's the authorpreparing us from the sides saying guys get ready south can have many wars .

This is really damn good and I'm glad I found it. So far it's an excellent story about a child soldier slowly learning magic and adapting to a life of peace away from the battlefields in a land that doesn't understand what the land he's from is like. It has deeper and darker themes sprinkled in, but it is well paced so that they are the exception and not the rule (as it should be in a story about escaping from violence).

A few people don't seem to like a story about an 11 year old kid learning magic and interacting with kids his age as he tries to be a normal boy, but is still stuck with his past, but like...the story wasn't hiding it's themes or direction so I'm not sure what they expected.

While nothing is for everyone, I would recommend everyone who thinks any of that sounds appealing to give this a look.

Such a shame, it starts really strong but it just turns into generic magical school fantasy BS with overpowered MC. They even have the "Noble that can't stand the commoners" trope and the "Classmate that are mysterious and secretly evil". Just to make it more generic

If you want to try it feel free, first 10 chapters should be enough to tell whether you'll like it or not
