Yeah i've seen this several times now across different manga. Considering Shigure's two friends hadn't heard of her and they're first years though, i'd imagine the bullies were from middle school, rather than high school. So there could be a different reason related to her music instead.

I've had a consistent problem with wired headphones and my Iphone. I put the phone in my front pants pocket, and the motion of my legs squishes the cable jack. After about three months, the wiring is ripped apart and the cable shorts.

Bluetooth has its own set of problems, but I've had to go that way because they at least don't self-destruct every season.
