I've had a consistent problem with wired headphones and my Iphone. I put the phone in my front pants pocket, and the motion of my legs squishes the cable jack. After about three months, the wiring is ripped apart and the cable shorts.

Bluetooth has its own set of problems, but I've had to go that way because they at least don't self-destruct every season.

The cheap $30 solution is to get a DAC/Amp dongle. If the cable spoils, you only have to replace the cable, and it's compatible with $5 cheap cables. I recommend Fiio melody or Trn black pearl. Anything else which says dual cs43131 is also OK.

The apple dongle adapter works, but the dongle is attached to the cable and it dies with the cable.

A more expensive solution is to get a headphone with separate cables. That way, only the cable breaks and the headphone remains. I use the audio technica m50x, but I hear people say good things about the m40x.
