I agree that it's a horrible trope, but in this instance I think it makes sense. As the eldest legitimate daughter from the first wife, Avril was a huge threat to the second wife and her daughter. So they treated her harshly and forbade her from receiving any teaching, because otherwise everyone would see how much better Avril was than Corina.

This seems less that they are bullying her for her talent and more that they are using that as an excuse to attack the legitimate heir as the oldest daughter from the original marriage. They just need something to screw her over and try to rip the right to succession from her to the younger half sister without it looking bad to other noble families. It doesn't seem that anyone outside the family and their loyal servants are bullying her as well; with the tutor she met calling her talented and praising her.

Plus this could be a world where women are not supposed to be having "Manly aspects" such as opinions or agency, but be demure quiet baby makers that run the household for their husband as he does the real work. So I wouldn't be surprised that someone like her might be bullied to "put her in her place" by some people who feel that woman should shut up and sit in the corner.

I love villainess stories but one of the things I dislike about them is the outlandish ways the authors of these stories sometimes go to victimize their main characters. Like "Oh, woe is me. Everyone hates me because I'm so kind, talented, beautiful and pure." It's really stretching the limits of believability and this story is probably the worst example I've seen so far.
