I looked into arranged marriages in Japan, known as omiai (お見合い), and according to Wikipedia, only about 5% of marriages today are arranged. It’s interesting because this trope shows up so often in manga that it gives the impression it's still common, when in reality, it's pretty rare.

What you don't see is that all of the other relationships you're NOT being shown in the manga is an arranged marriage. You're just being shown the ones that are and only when it matters to the story.

There's a big difference between an "arranged marriage" through a matchmaking agency where both sides are trying to find someone they like and the "arranged marriage" where the son or (usually) daughter is treated like a piece of meat for business or political reasons.
