She's pretentious and condescending because she's an author stand-in without any humanizing flaws. And every time tension from an interaction between Hina and Asahi--be it awkward tension or otherwise--she's there to be Hina's crutch and the cycle resets.

Exactly !! If she really wanted that relationship to happen, she could at least have the decency to stay out the way or kindly STFU instead of insulting lil bro at the first excuse...

Page 10 made me want to shoot off his kneecaps.
Page 14 made me want to punch his face until every bone in my hand broke.

this manga is getting too boring, Tsukko is likely one of the worst big sisters i've seen in fiction, she isn't caring about her brother (as any good sibling should be in order to have a healthy relationship with them), she doesn't help neither of them, not pushes over akkun so he can get a LITTLE confidence to go forward, expecting him to be able to do something that might or might not crush his relationship with his beloved
And on top of that, she manages to do the unbelievable thing of resetting situations that could spark a new step in their relationship. 0/10, terrible human being.

because all of you here totally would do better

These types of comments are always hilarious, nice joke
In other stories I get it because the MC is legitimately pathetic and it gets grating, like imo the ML in I Want To End This Love Game, but in this story the MC just feels like a normal guy who is a little shy sometimes and is too scared to ruin his relationship with someone he's known for years and years by making a move. Its like if you don't wanna read a slow burn romance why are you reading Japanese stories?

Also it's his big sister's friend. Definitely hard to confess to an older person, especially if he's a secondary student and she's a university student (huge gap in maturity!). Doubly so since he's known her for a while and it seems in-universe she's clearly extremely attractive and "out of his league".

Huh I just realized that neither of the ryokan I've been to had ping pong tables, yet they seem to be in basically every ryokan featured in manga... Wonder if this is another thing that's kinda garnished for fun or if I've just missed out.

I believe Asahi himself, just like Tsukko, is supposed to be in-universe really good looking. Tsukko has been depicted as having a beauty hobby, if not a way of life. Hina is, then, her "creation". Hina's basic personality is a lot more lax and friendly than Tsukko's. I reckon it was Tsukko who coached Hina to always look so fabulous. Asahi has always been in these two's company, plus he's natural among the girls of his own class. I feel like the hard to confess part plays a stronger role than out of his league part. Unless I remember utterly wrong the early chapters, one big problem is that he has sort of fallen into a little brother zone in his own opinion, what comes to Hina. She's very comfortable in his presence, which makes Asahi believe she's not really aware of him at all, as if he was just a member of her own family. So, he might as well be her little brother. This makes him afraid that if he suddenly approached her romantically, it would create an exceedingly weird atmosphere.

That being said, as a much younger lad, he must also feel insufficient in many ways in front an older, more mature person, like you said.
