On a side note, I think focusing only on Marie and Leon and as a result not having Marie as an "unnecessary" villain, allows the story to have its own room to grow and be something more than just a copy of the "game" story. It also helps that the dynamic between the two feels much better than Livia-Angie-Leon in the main story. (It also makes Marie feel more like a real person due to her flaws and trauma, while Livia and Angie are a little too less described.)

I personally think it also has something to do with the tone of the storys. While not necessarily darker, the spin off feels more serious, with the stakes being more personal, while the main story wants to remain mostly comedic.

Right? In the original story, she was just bratty. In here, she is much more complicated, which makes her a lot more likable and sympathetic. Now I see why she is really popular among the fans of the series.

By extension, I will look at her differently in the main story too.

she bratty because she meet those 5 stooges before Leon. leon changes Olivia and Ange for better when he decided to connect and interfere. in this timeline Leon meet Marie first thus changes her attitude for better. because she failed at the beginning and it spiral other bad route make her realize she is on wrong path. Leon said he getting Luxion not affecting main story because it DLC item but he forget this is not game, he making name already alter the timeline and story. in supposed OG timeline, Leon Bradford never make his name as adventure as "he" never obtain Luxion.

on the main timeline, she successful to ensnare 5 stooges makes she believes her plan is right thus refuse to listen to Leon. "when we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest changes".

the best possible timeline is Leon interact with Maria, Olivia and Ange instead of trying to preserve the main story.

Admittedly, I only skimmed volume 4 because all I could find were MTL which made my head hurt, but it didn't really feel dark? I mean, it's definitely darker than the main story, but the main story is light to the point where opposition is almost meaningless. There are certainly not-nice things that happen, but they seem to be in the bounds of a regular story?

Then again, maybe I'm judging "dark" according to the standards of the grimderp stuff. That's probably too high of a bar.

Yeah this is still pretty far from where it truly goes dark. No named Holfort characters have even died yet aren't they. In main series there's none.
