I mean, it makes sense. If said person can kill you at any time he feels like it before you can even think of retaliating but has no reason to do unless you give him a reason to, then might as well do whatever it takes to ensure that he doesn't have a reason.
Especially if he can kill every important person in the city in just one night. No need to make an enemy when you can avoid it.

it makes about as much sense as trusting a guy who just pulled a gun on you. realistically all he's done is shown himself to be a massive threat to each of those guys. that's not a basis for trust, that's just being at the mercy of his whims.
