Its not the stupidity. Its the self serving action. Thanos and Joker take their issues out on the world as if it is their right to decide the fate and lives of anyone on a whim because they personally are "just".
This "should have been the Hero" nut case believes in his own view of right and wrong as being the only one that truly matters and all others who do not agree with his personal justice are wrong, the moment he has the power to enforce it - he will... as he did. In his case he was supposed to be the hero and if he cant, he will make sure that nobody is.
