Moving away from the talk of whether or not power of friendship is a tired old cliche and whether MC should have murdered the fucker i think there is something to be said for the nature of the ring.
In retrospect Leo seems to feel bad for his actions but something he said seems a bit off considering what we know about him from the flashbacks. He didn't even seem to consider setting eligos free from her contract, like didn't even think of it as an option once he got the ring. he was just laser focused on keeping the ring, enslaving the demons, and making sure no more were set free when he found out thats what ritsu was doing.
From a logical standpoint if all he wanted was eligos, and to make sure no one else could use the ring to take her from him, wouldn't the first thing he should do be to free her from her contract? That way the ring doesn't matter, at all. Like forget asking ritsu to do it, the guy probably didn't trust that ritsu is as good a person as he is, he never even bothered to attempt it himself, nor thought about it as a viable option.
So here is my theory. The curse of solomon has been mentioned many times now. It always leads to the eventual death of the rings owner, after they lead a fairly evil and/or corrupt life with the rings power. What if the curse corrupts the thoughts and feelings of those who use it, taking their own magic power and turning it on them to make them more likely to do things that get themselves killed?
Ritsu who seems to have very little actual magic power, mystery of the super power up kiss aside, is perhaps immune to the rings corrupting influence only because he just doesn't have enough magic for the ring to use against him.
That's my theory any way. It's entirely possible Leo took such drastic actions due to being exposed to the rings curse at such an early age. That doesn't excuse him trying to murder ritsu mind you, i am not saying that at all, but maybe there's foreshadowing of a darker plot behind the ring from all this.
unless of course like alot of people who comment on this series you don't believe the writer is capable of that kind of subtlety with their story. But hey i just thought i'd throw out my 2 cents. give the story the benefit of the doubt with my optimism.
Side note: @Yautja Glad to see you still around. I always love your take on this kind of thing.
