Japanese authors are notorious for this. Think of other series like Domestic Girlfriend, where one of the main girls goes along with the guy for like 2/3rds of the manga, and all the stuff that goes with it, then bam last few chapters the dude does a completely illogical 180, all because of “well the other girl was my first crush hurr durr”. I can think of lots others rn but I can’t remember their names.

TL;DR - the Japanese are in love with “fate” or “first loves”, the story and buildup be damned.

Honestly the nervousness, excitement and that heartbeat in the throat feeling wasn't there. Asumi isn't giving the same energy to Mai and I didn't feel it either while reading Ch. 29. I'm rooting for Mai so that is kinda sad. Asumi had that thought "Nanou and I are kissing!!" when they hooked up the first time but nothing with Mai. Is she even interested? It doesn't seem so to me. I'm really bumbed about that and I was rooting for them. She's gravitating more towards Nanou.
