Japanese authors are notorious for this. Think of other series like Domestic Girlfriend, where one of the main girls goes along with the guy for like 2/3rds of the manga, and all the stuff that goes with it, then bam last few chapters the dude does a completely illogical 180, all because of “well the other girl was my first crush hurr durr”. I can think of lots others rn but I can’t remember their names.

TL;DR - the Japanese are in love with “fate” or “first loves”, the story and buildup be damned.
