Mom got it.
"Should we have done that?.... But she is so sad."

Dad doesn't/won't because he is wrapped up in his own anger and grief.
"The job of the parent is to protect their child. It was the correct thing to do."

Dad will get zero sympathy from me this entire book. He is the front runner for the Dick of the Series award.

@DukeTogo He's a completely normal parent, here. For all he knows, these things he can't even see have been manipulating his daughter since she was little to get something from her, that's kind of how all the legends and folklore tends to go and that's all someone like him would have to go on. His daughter seeming happy when interacting with them isn't a good indicator of anything at all. He also has reason to suspect the last person in his family that could see and interact with things like this died early because of it. That isn't something you'd set aside that easily when you still can't see them yourself, and especially not when the person in question now is your own child.

The mother's response might feel more correct because we have more knowledge about the characters and setting than frankly any of the characters do since we're observing them all from the outside, but the father's response is honestly more prudent from a realistic perspective.

It's always funny when people try to incorporate the anime logic with the reality.

In anime world, spirits are poor misunderstood souls who are just trying to be your best friends, so it'd be unfortunate for your parents to freak out.

In reality, besides their doubtful existence, many accounts of testimonies tend to describe spirits as evil and dangerous, so of course your parents would be freaking out if you interact with the ones.

Anime and reality are not compatible. I don't know why bunch of people here are trying to one-sidedly argue whether her parents are assholes or not.

I wonder if mom will be more sympathetic now if Mahoro brings up that she scared the heck out of her invisible home security guard.
