What the manga presented as a perfectly ethnically valid payback? Don't even get me started.
Wait, there were people who got incensed that Naofumi had their names changed to shameful epithets that weren't also angry that he didn't have them put to death like they were supposed to be?

First, one does not preclude the other.
Second, it's not "changed their names" but also "had them enslaved through mind-affecting magic".
The problem, again, is entirely in the manga depicting this kind of "eye-for-an-eye, no matter how ugly it gets" behaviour as just and morally justified.

Danvolodar, seriously? "pick up lines?" That's a hella lot of motives you are shoving into the MC's mouth. The more you talk, the faster your IQ just drops through the floor. You don't read your source material and you use "justice" as a thinly veiled cloak to hide your ultra simp "MUH QUEEN" motives. Just stop you utter joke.

First, one does not preclude the other.
My point is that the most irritation I saw from readers was with Naofumi choosing to not kill them.

Second, it's not "changed their names" but also "had them enslaved through mind-affecting magic".
If you're talking about the slave crests, those were used to force them into telling the truth under penalty of death by the force of the crests. They didn't "affect the mind"-- the pain was physical.

The problem, again, is entirely in the manga depicting this kind of "eye-for-an-eye, no matter how ugly it gets" behaviour as just and morally justified.
Are you referencing something that happens in the LN that has yet to be adapted in anime or manga?

Not even the premise of that statement is correct-- it's antithetical to Naofumi's character, because the point of the first arc (and part of his general character, really) is that he rejects the impulse for vengeance despite having been wronged. Partly because that impulse is literally destructive to himself and his friends, partly because he's too intrinsically good natured for it, and partly because he was aware that the option of execution-- that would have been someone killing their own spouse and daughter-- was something that nobody wanted.

The entire point of sparing those two lives instead of letting them be executed like they were supposed to is that it's not a tit-for-tat action, but is more constructive and somehow more satisfying. And they're clearly not mind-affected in any way, for them to still be comically angry about being disgraced instead of executed.

I might be misremembering. So then it's simply torture, not mind control? Much better, changes everything, really.

Aha, he rejects his impulse for vengeance by taking his vengeance in full, all the while inventing novel ways to humiliate, mock and denigrate those who have wronged him instead of seeking actual justice through proper legal procedure.

Looks like he made a huge breakthru to her. She is taking refuge at his home is a good beginning for this circumstance. Hopefully trust can be built and we are making progress. Thanks for the chapter and translation

So then it's simply torture,
They're using it as a lie detector, partly because at least one of the tried parties is a pathological liar (that still tries to, fully knowing the consequences).

...no.

That's actually not at all what happens, and now I'm concerned about whether we're talking about two different series.

Not only does he not do that, but "the proper legal procedure"-- until his vindication-- was leveraged to make a kangaroo court case because they were heavily prejudiced against Shield heroes in general. The authorities that thus condemned him also manufactured evidence and attempted to frame him for their attempted murder of the heiress apparent.

Branding his offenders with new names was a privilege given to him by the "proper legal procedure" after his vindication in a non-kangaroo court he could have never gotten on his own, and it was something he personally decided as an alternative to the torture and/or double execution that was recommended to him by that legal process.

The character in question himself did it so that the queen does not have to sentence her child to death. Since he is one of the wronged parties, it can be justified that his suggestion of the punishment should be taken into account so that the queen does not have to impartially judge them as would be expected of her.

All things considered, within the universe, the character made a merciful decision that was able to appease the relevant parties and spare his abusers from death.
instead of seeking actual justice through proper legal procedure
What are you talking about? The punishment was approved by the literal queen of the country. How much more legal can it even get than approval of the reigning monarch?

Creepiness factor is different between genders simply for biological reasons: as long as pregnancy and giving birth will remain massive investments of resources for women, affecting their lives for years, men will be the ones normatively seeking relationships and thus men will be the ones seen as creeps for showing attention inappropriately.
You put way too much thought into it. Women are seen as weak and pure, they must be protected! Men are seen as beast that want to dominate and defile women. In actuality both sexes have their fair share of shitty, abusive, explotitave people. Being a bad person knows no gender.

They're using it as a lie detector, partly because
...they're pseudomedieval imbeciles who do not know that torture is not a lie-detecting tool. Shield was isekaid, though, so he knows better.

I don't think bickering back and forth "this is not what happens" - "totally is" is something we should do. Fact remains that as a result of his actions, the parties who wronged him got a cruel and unusual punishment, which is presented by the manga as totally a-okay since, you know, the poor baby had been wronged.

Branding his offenders with new names was a privilege given to him by the "proper legal procedure" after his vindication in a non-kangaroo court he could have never gotten on his own, and it was something he personally decided as an alternative to the torture and/or double execution that was recommended to him by that legal process.
A single person taking arbitrary legal decisions without competitive court process cannot by definition be anything but a kangaroo court. Again, pseudomedieval imbeciles might not know better, Shield does, yet he gladly uses the system to exact his vengeance instead of changing it.

Yep, which is a reflection of the same biological mechanism, one that demands society to allow men to compete for attention of women, while as much as possible minimizing the harm caused in the process.

In actuality both sexes have their fair share of shitty, abusive, explotitave people. Being a bad person knows no gender.
Goes without saying. But since men are on average stronger, faster, more used to conflict and tolerating pain caused by it, they tend to be abusers much more often (as well as, btw, victims - about 75% of violent crime victims are male, again see above about biological nature of social norms).

It is, when the torture is at the behest of a magic tattoo that will only ever torture when you're lying.

You're misremembering a lot. That, or you haven't even read the manga.

I don't think bickering back and forth "this is not what happens" - "totally is" is something we should do. Fact remains that--
"We shouldn't discuss what actually happened-- instead, you should just allow me to dictate what actually happened, even as I'm fabricating details!"

Fact remains that as a result of his actions, the parties who wronged him got a cruel and unusual punishment
In lieu of someone having to have her own husband and daughter executed for summoning all four Cardinal Heroes behind her back and causing an international power imbalance on account of each country having already agreed to summon only one of the four heroes, framing one of said heroes of capital crimes (rape, raping a royal), and attempting to execute the heiress apparent.

You notice how you've went from "the manga glorifies 'eye for an eye' no matter how ugly" to "they were subjected to cruel and unusual punishment" after I demonstrated that there's absolutely no way you can interpret what happened as eye-for-an-eye?

Why would you even try to argue that a sentence that's in no way on par with what they subjected him to (an unjustly tarnished reputation) or would deserve if he had been guilty and wasn't a Cardinal Hero (death), and is practically a joke on top of being a clear departure from what the recommended sentence was, is "cruel and unusual"? Will you now argue that it's "at least unusual"? Even if that's the point, and the sequence is meant to demonstrate that Naofumi is a person who'll choose to reject vengeance in favor of constructive mercy, even when he's freely allowed the former?

A single person taking arbitrary legal decisions without competitive court process
They got point blank proof of the crimes committed. Your argument hinges on the lie detecting slave crest not being definitively and demonstrably accurate.

Actually, that's false-- your argument hinges on you misrepresenting the highly convenient magic lie detector as a means of conventional torture that shocks first and asks questions later, rather than the other way around. A misrepresentation that would imply that the queen in fact wanted to have her husband and firstborn executed, even though she clearly did not and in fact counted on the Shield Hero's mercy as an means to not do so.
