Assuming they were 16 at this time, then post-time skip they'd be 21 and he'd be in college (hopefully she is, too).

She wasn't banned from owning a phone or anything, right? I guess he didn't have the money to spare and get her one, and I guess his parents didn't approve of their relationship at this time so he couldn't borrow money from them?
