This has been touched on by a few other posts but i'm not sure if they encompassed my specific thought.
There are several manga i have come across where there have been special chapters, inserts, Forewords/Afterwords, Bonus booklets etc. etc. These are generally not included in the chapter numbering scheme for the series. Currently they are handled by simply adding a .1, .2, .3 etc etc.
As has been pointed out there are cases where this looks like crap and/or does not really jive with the proper chapter numbering for a series.
My proposed solution is to essentially have 3 columns for sorting, Volume, Chapter, and a third (back-end numbering 1,2,3,4,etc)
By doing this it should be very easy to satisfy all manga types and numbering conventions. Sorting would go as follows
Volume>Backed numbering sequence> chapter (ignored for sorting but is only displayed if data is entered) This will allow for chapter numbering that is not alphanumeric.
Using this method All the miscellaneous entries will be where they are supposed to be in the chapter sort but you won't have to give it a chapter number if no chapter number exists
For when users upload a chapter you can automatically insert it into a slot based on either of 2 methods
1) If user enters only chapter number/volume then it simply add a value to the back end sort on where that would fall based on the existing Volume/Chapter sorting
2) allow the user to enter the back end sort number themselves.
To ease the process i would also suggest a chapter upload page to have the list of chapters right under (same view as the title page but only listing the chapters with the 3rd back end sort view-able) It already auto fills the manga title and you were literally just on the page with all the chapters listed on it so this might be easily doable.
