I can see why someone would say he lost his way. This chapter is not exactly on the level of Golden Age arc though.

I always thought Miura had some inclinations to the sort of thing you mention, but never heard of anyone mentioning it. In the most memorable parts of Berserk those aesthetic inclinations resulted in pieces of dramatic grandeur, reminiscent of late 70's manga (In particular Griffith reminds me of Hi Izuru Tokoro no Tenshi), depravity, erotism and the grotesque... He didn't mind tropes of genre and got the best of both worlds.

But Berserk can sometimes feel like a sugared drink compared to what it was... All those colorful lol!s and elves, the the generously bossomed witches, Farnese having her womanly self-discovery, Isidro taking up space and Shirke floating around since 2000 or so... Every time he choose to give himself time to think what to actually do next by inserting meaningless crap, he inflicted damage on the quality of the masterpiece. We could get straight to the point, with no decrement in boob scenes.

Gut's trauma is the pillar of Berserk, and now that it's coming to and end it is a matter of deciding how they're going to resolve it... Surely not with some incantations, right? If we get another upgrade to his build, isn't that like some teenage shounen.

And to add a "by the way, where's my dinner?" dialogue made me double-take.

The old wizards have always been depicted as whimsical to some extent, and Miura have always done this sort of jokes (though usually it's with Puck and Isidro in the background of an ongoing dialog)

We're reading what's basically a secondhand retelling of the story, cut them some slack.

I see the point... But well, coming to think of it, wasn't Griffith quite a young maiden with a sword on the thighs in the prototype pilot?I think those were always his ways... But never in explicit dialogue that lead to nothing, or at least it was there in ways that one can say "Meh, it's for the sake of the story" (as in the harem of that guy Griffith pr_stituted himself to) or "It's quite a sight to have, but giving much attention to it would hindrance understanding/quality of the story" (As in all the times elves and fairies displayed ass cheeks and what not, from Puck being a shota from the very start to Rosie flying around naked while being the youngest apostle... You know, imagery that doesn't take much space nor time).

A good thing about Berserk in this prime was that it was never violence for the sake of violence nor sex for the sake of some niche hornyness (except all those times Miura sold through Caska being randomly disrobed and whatnot, but that's pretty average I guess). But even all those massacres and r4pes that are expected to be taken seriously, as of lately, tend to feel like a cheap way of causing impact.

Berkman lost its way when they went on that decade long boat arc with budget jack sparrow. Everything before that was peak.
