Side effect of MTL. I doubt like 99.9% of scanlations have anyone that's fluent in both languages anymore, and a lot of pronouns aren't gendered in Asian languages, at least as far as I can tell.
It's why every single grunt or mumble from a character comes out as "Um" here; there's no nuance in the MTL to know the difference between what sort of noise is appropriate. One example I can think of is the date chapter after they leave the fortune teller, and Leon asks if they could possibly have more children, she responds with "Um" first, but it really should be a "Hmm..." or something.
At this point I just mentally replace anything fucky-sounding, myself.
Agreed. It's definitely a shame how the translation quality has been going down.
It's one thing to use MTL, but it's another to not proofread the result.
Even if the so-called translators aren't necessarily good at english, gendered pronouns are one of the most basic aspects of english.
One thing that I would like is if the groups actually said they were using MTL at the start of their scans, which was often done by small groups or individuals working on translating manga, manhua etc.
They don't really do that anymore either.
I've read more than enough badly translated stuff, MTL or otherwise, that I also tend to just autocorrect things while reading. This one with the gendered pronouns just irks me a bit more than the rest.
