As I said, I can't recall details after reading for so long. Basically, just ask yourself whether you'd do anything differently if you're the mother, and why. Try to justify that you could do better than she ever could, and realize that you can't. Then you may be able to understand the cleverness of the author, as well as the ingenuity of the depiction. It helps that you can pick up subtle hints, tone shifts, inner thoughts of the characters through the godly art too.
