I am interested to see how it goes with his motivations, a couple comments have mentioned that it could be anti-western with it, which is possible, but could also be something else.

A couple predictions that I think could be interesting or possible:
He was brainwashed/controlled by the demon king or devils, or possibly even possessed by the demon king.

Found some kind of "hidden truth" in the world that made him turn (like hajime in arifureta)

or could have been drafted into the war and was just never a good person to begin with and was just forced to join and fight, although especially with this one it would make me wonder about his relation with kojiro then
