It feels like the story... just started? Like as of last chapter. Like the characters are finally actually moving forward and everything before was a smokescreen, which kinda sucks given how many chapters it's been.

? I don't get it. Don't most stories generally need a conflict for the main characters to work towards and solve? The conflict here is past trauma and ill-relations.

Without that established, when (if) the story reaches its climax, would it not feel like a different story was sold to us?

Imagine if Naruto started when Naruto became a genin and not as a shunned kid desperate for acknowledgement. Would the end of the Pain arc hit as hard?

well said. the story is quite enjoyable reading in one go.
that said, i can see how some stuff could've been shuffled better or sped up. like, we only hit on MC's real trauma in chapter 25? so most people who dropped it in the first 5 chapters missed a big part of the main plot, because it was introduced to late~
