I'm surprised by the amount of hate in this thread.

If the protagonist was actually unlikeable, people would probably be way more accepting of everything the author keeps putting him through and just laugh at the "jokes" at his expense. But Sorata isn't unlikeable. He knows what he wants, he's honest about it, and he actively fights for it, so naturally people are going to root for him. And when that happens, the characters constantly getting in his way are inevitably going to be perceived as the "bad guys", whether the author intends them to be or not.

I mean, who else is even serving as an antagonist in this story? Most of the conflict comes from Miyuki being somehow capable of expressing her feelings to everyone except the one person who actually needs to hear them, while constantly pushing Sorata to his limit with misunderstandings and nonsense. She literally confesses her feelings to him in this very chapter... while he's asleep, which by the way, she made sure to poke him before to see if he really was sleeping so he could not hear what she confessed. The story isn't even hiding where most of its conflict comes from.

Then you have her brother and other characters who genuinely seem to think she's way too good for him, plus his own friend, who could easily help clear up some of these misunderstandings but deliberately chooses not to and just lets everything happen.

And the funny thing is that the manga itself calls some of this behavior out, so I don't think the author is unaware of what he's doing (obviously). He's deliberately creating these situations and then dragging them out for "comedy" and drama.

So I'm honestly not surprised by the hate at all. When you make your protagonist sympathetic, have him clearly communicate what he wants, and then build most of the conflict around everyone else either refusing to communicate with him or actively making things worse, readers are obviously going to side with him and get pissed at the people standing in his way.

At this point, I think the author just enjoys watching this poor guy suffer. You will see, the "joke" will repeat itself next chapter.

Honestly at this point I'd welcome a triangle (provided its another girl being interested in Sorata not the other way around because I'm not here to sit through another volume of him getting his confidence crushed because she doesn't know how to say how feels) as another girl in the mix might actually get her to realize this acting coy shit ain't it

I would be happy for a rival to Miyuki.

I absolutely do not trust the author to not introduce another roadblock for Sorata instead.

I miss the early source of conflict. The very premise of the manga was that Sorata tended to misunderstood Miyuki's words, thinking her colder and more hostile than she really is because he mistook it for "Kyoto politeness" (like her brother does). Back then, the blame could be shared more or less equally: Miyuki could be more clear, but Sorata was too negative.

However, for quite some time the main conflict seems to be that the main pair doesn't communicate, either because Miyuki in particular is dragging her feet or they keep being interrupted by contrived circumstances. The initial premise was probably too hard to be played straight for long, so the author is relying on the usual relationship miscommunication drama.

The initial premise was probably too hard to be played straight for long, so the author is relying on the usual relationship miscommunication drama.

The initial gimmick was good for a 4-volume series. They even have the Altair/Vega angle built into this, and logically it would have culminated in everything being laid out during the Kyoto trip, likely on that night they were finally talking after their big fight after he said she should move back to Kyoto for school.

If it had gone the way it arguably should have, Miyuki would have confessed her feelings and how she wants to be with him, and the misunderstanding would have been explained, and we'd see this end in 2 chapters completing the volume. Short, sweet, reasonable enough.

The moment her mother interrupted them, that tidy conclusion was gone. The moment the two "friends" interrupted again and Miyuki ran away from Sorata's affirmation of loving her, it all but confirmed the author wants chapter count over anything competently-written.

This can now drag on for as long as the author can avoid the Axe, now. It's no longer a "Kyotoism-based misdirection romcom", and I expect we'll see all the usual trope fare used to extend a series into perpetuity, only all of it will be at Sorata's expense, because Miyuki is too perfect to be allowed to suffer.

yes, it's a reference back to chapter 16 when Ayano greeted him specifically with Ochazuke upon arriving in Kyoto.

Also, reading back through trying to find that reference, reminded me just how godawful both Ayano and Mary are from the word 'go'.

Sorata saying things won’t change much seems like a direct message from the author. Aw, man. If people are into this sorta tug-of-war plotline then they’re in heaven. But, really, the story could have ended here.

They want to be tortured by psychotic creators who write nonsense like this. Off the charts misunderstandings and zero honest communication.
