I don't know about other countries, but in the UK at least cute is taken at face value when in reference to kids. It's not unusual for anyone and everyone to refer to kids as cute, the same way you'd call a puppy or a kitten cute. It doesn't carry the same meaning, and wouldn't be said in the same way as when you say it to someone you find attractive.It must be so difficult for boys/masc to say something looks cute on a kid when you don't want to sound like a kiddy diddler..... People are going to assume that right away while shrug it off when a girl/fem says it.

It might be that he used a specific word that means cute, but that can be misconstrued in this situation, as I believe Japanese has multiple words for cute ( Kawaii and moe for example). English just has one. So while the translation is correct, it probably carried more meaning in the raws.
