Screw it, let's get a harem end. I'm sure they can find ways to divide his things equally among them for fair sniffing.

Fnck ... I want all of the ships ... ALL OF THE DAMN SHIPS. *breathes heavily*

But in reality, the author is setting up Ogata to 'win'. If you haven't forgotten that chapter at the end of the school festival arc where 'someone' grabs his hand as the fireworks were going off potentially fulfilling the prophecy that the ones to hold hands during the fireworks will stay together forever, coupled with the fact that Ogata would not have had a second thought from helping him up off the ground, tripled with the other comment that Nariyuki made saying that the event ultimately caused things to go in a direction which actually fulfilled the prophecy, quadrupled with the recent Ogata based chapters she is being positioned to be closer to him than the others, plus that she knew what he was doing before the others, and also that he is working at her restaurant means *gasps for air ... then takes a deep breath* that a lot of people will be salty that their 'best' girl didn't 'win'.

My favorite was out of the race first, my second favorite pretends to have too many objections and my third favorite plays too much. But my fourth, fifth, and sixth favorites are all great girls that I wouldn't mind him ending up with at all. Whichever one he 'chooses' (and by chooses I mean which one the author chooses for his desired ending) is fine with me.

Isn't it because the college he wants to go to doesn't use the recommendation?
It's not about using the recommendation to go to a college. It's about him doing what he wants to do.

His family is poor, so he's been studying to go somewhere high class and eventually get a high paying job. The thing is,
he grew a passion for teaching. Whether it's from teaching his siblings or those 3 girls, he respects the profession.

This whole conflict is about whether Nariyuki should selfishly decide to go for a low paying teaching job, where he'll have to work
harder to even get in since there's no way for him to get a recommendation, or use his recommendation to go to a prestigious
college and come out with a high paying job to support his family. Basically the story is saying, that you should do what makes you
happy, even if it's hard. That's the same thing the 3 girls are doing right?

Pages 7 and 8 of this chapter show that that explicitly is the case. Nariyuki outright says that he can't use the VIP recommendation because none of those colleges offer a suitable program for him. The "start from scratch" bit is about him learning how to be a teacher properly starting from the fundamentals, rather than building off the stuff he's cobbled together by himself.

It's not "Using the recommendation would give me an advantage so I won't be equal to them." It's "Using the recommendation would require me to half-ass my goals, and I can't match up to them unless I do this wholeheartedly."

I think you're reading it wrong here. Nariyuki doesn't say that there are education colleges that accept the recommendation. He acknowledges that he could take education classes at the colleges that do accept the recommendation. Since the "teaching courses" bit is a follow-up to the teaching certificate suggestion, that seems to be implying that the courses are more of a supplemental thing rather than a focused program.

As such, accepting the VIP recommendation actually is incompatible with giving it his all. If he takes it, he's forced to learn some subject and also learn how to be a teacher. If he declines it, he can fully commit to specifically becoming a teacher. Because he's not talented, he feels he can't afford to split his focus. Just as Fumino is going straight for science; Uruka, swimming; and Rizu, psychology; Nariyuki wants to focus on education.

Aaaaaaagh. Now I see the problem. I thought @givemersspls might have been overstating things with the "literally no sense" statement but... this... truly makes very little sense.

From what I can tell the arc of the story so far goes like this:

-> Nariyuki's family isn't well off, so he wants to get a good job
-> Needs the college recommendation so he can go to a prestigious college
-> Nariyuki puts in hard work for recommendation
-> Nariyuki tutors the girls against all odds (overarching romance development throughout)
-> Learns that he likes teaching (gathering girls along the way like a concubine katamari)
-> Is inspired by them to go for his actual want-to-do thing, which is teaching
-> Doesn't want to... use them? as a stepping stone to do that thing?
-> So he turns down the recommendation
-> Meaning he has to work to earn tuition, to go to a college, to get a teaching degree...

But... You had... the thing...

Your pride is seriously causing you to do this? Your pride?? "No, I won't take a handout! That's not what these girls who I look up to did! They worked for their successes!" You did too, you idiot! You were handed a task that multiple professional tutors tried and failed, and succeeded, and continue to do so!

Ugh. I feel like this turn of events only makes sense because no one is stepping in to say "hey uh you earned your keep tutoring those two/three/four girls in need, take your reward?" I mean, it's what he wants to do? But he's thinking about it in a very strange way. I don't think it "makes the world worse", necessarily.

In the end, I can't actually grab Nariyuki by the shoulders and yell at him (and if I did maybe he'd explain his motivation better to me) but... Ugh.

As long as he's happy. He doesn't seem to be suffering for this. If anything he's enjoying the challenge.

I am conflicted

EDIT: I reread the pages where he tries to explain himself to the girls. From what I can tell, @Fulgurion is in the right when it comes to the exact details of the courses the colleges offer.

IF HE TAKES THE RECOMMENDATION: Go to a high class college for free, learn good math, science, etc, learn how to teach that subject, and become a teacher.

IF HE DOES NOT: Go to a middling reputation college for some money, learn specifically how to Teach as a skill, and become a teacher.

The end goal is the same, but the things he gleans from the education path laid before him are quite different. With this in mind, I can see why he might choose this path. Still a bit miffed that he doesn't at least get a ribbon of qualification or something. "He Almost Got The Very Elite Recommendation" on a nice embossed piece of paper.
