Just my opinion but it would've been a lot better writing for her to notice that her affection towards Lottson was only superficial, and that they had nothing in common with each others, and the more she knew about him the more she noticed that she didn't find him interesting at all.. Author could've dropped the whole "btw married" etc. shit after all that anyways..
