"People bring up Usagi Drop because they're all triggered by the ending of what was a father figure teaching a daughter about the truths of the world and she then decided to go date him. Like, oh no! So turrible!"
It's terrible because it's unrealistic and ridiculous, a child raised normaly wouldn't grow with romantic feelings for their parents, in the same way the real childhood friends rarely have romantic feelings for each other, being treated closer to siblings.

"I mean fuck, these people apparently have never heard of an actual classic Hikaru Genji, which many stories channel. This practice is really common in history, and only modernly have people for some reason become averse to it for seemingly no reason. I mean, shit, it's not like this manga is Murcilago where you actively encourage the loli to be bad (even there, it's still pretty wholesome all things given)."
Some people like stories like that for whatever reason, but many actually hate them.

Context friend maybe you should learn of it then you'd understand that it's not "for no reason"
This practice is common in history because dying early is common in history, because overvaluing one's lineage is also common in history, because old farts ahd way too much power bback in history and they wanted to ensure the survival of their family as soon as they could. These practices were ususally common in noble houses and were copied by some peasants, noble houses believed in purity of blood, and they would sometimes even get incestuous if it meant that they would keep their blood strong. Because back then it was believed that people from same family always inherited the ability their family was known for. Back then we didn't have science to know how genetics work, so they spread this Idea that some people's lineage were simply born superior. So they need to maintain that superiority at all costs.
And they would do literally everything to mantain their power, even using their daughters as money and make agreements with old farts by selling their "daughter" for political gains.
Knowing this would you really use the "common practice in history" as a valid point in this argument?

@BloodySorcerer pls don't do the "it's rarely happen and unrelatable, so it must be bad", it will draw in bad analogies.

I do agree about your take on the common practice in history. Events happened while having nuances in each of them, so does any event in any kind of stories. I guess people don't like Usagi Drop because it started and written with familial nuances but ended up with romantical ending.

@APSINTHOS To be fair, what angered people the most was how out of fucking nowhere it came: it was purely child raising and family caring (with some small added drama for spice) for the first 80-90% of the manga, when all out of sudden the mangaka decided to make the girl develop never before seen feelings for his father figure and him being ok with it (not to mention how it retconned itself to make it less morally questionable).

It wasn't so much the end result so as the horrible way it was handled.

A few times, can be remembered as "a lot" in childhood memories. And "That one big time we visited that special place!", might just have been one more family outing that isn't remembered at all.

I really need to reread Usagi Drop at some point because I just did not ever have the same "blindsided" impression of it that all these random people always complaining about it did. Then again, people are currently willfully ignoring all the signs in that one ongoing age gap/adopted series about the little demon girl,. They were probably doing it with Usagi Drop too. Or I'm misremembering how early on it seemed obvious because I didn't give a shit either way (fictional people can do whatever the hell they want for all I care, it's not actually hurting anyone). Like I said, I really need to reread it because this has been bugging me for a while now and people relentlessly bring it up whenever stuff like this series shows up.

Usagi Drop? That's a name I haven't heard in a long time... A looooong time.

I just didn't like the end purely because you can't write a platonic love for a good majority, then suddenly say boom romance at the end.
Maybe if it had more implied romantic gestures midway to temper expectations, but then again maybe people might have been put off long before the ending.
But I think there could have been a good balance between playful banter/flirting before the surprise ending.
Again just me, but I really could not stand how that went down, even if it was a cute story til that point.

Even the smallest of things can take up the most precious of memories.
