wouldn't it be hilarious if Nagi was somehow related to Reiji or some other character? we get a surprising amount of focus on this "uncle" of hers, and the fact that Nagi Aoe is not her real name also sparks some intrigue. i'm interested in seeing where this goes.

Don't think it's the case, though.
We're in the endgame, boys and girls of the abyss!

This shit needs to wrap up, tbh. It's spinning its wheels and dragging on way too long.

I think it was young esemori
It's young Esemori. His 17yo self precisely, the one who rejected and demonized Yuko.

Be thankful it's ending soon.
That soon being 1 or 2 more volumes (we're either at 1 or 2 chapts from finishing the contents for vol. 16, meaning the safest ending points are around chapters 170-184).

I mean, she lost her entire family, have to cut off the only people that would genuinely care for her, the uncle, from her life, while having to sell her body as A CHILD to just barely surviving. Reiji's brother, and Chako, as much as the abuse goes, at least still be able to somewhat live a normal life with a roof, warm meals and a little amount of true love and caring from their families

Yeah and you know who else had a sad backstory like that? Reiji's mom. She sold her body young and LONGER than Nagi, emotionally had no one, abuse for all of her life, and countless other things by that woman. But you know what? She had character. She had a personality. She was basically the cockroach that would not die, however, you could give a list about her personality traits as a character. All of the characters have gone through abuse and hardships while Nagi is just.... there.

I'm not blaming the character. I'm blaming the mangaka for wasting a good character. They could have done some amazing storytelling with Nagi when they didn't. They did such storytelling for Esemori's ex-gf who was barely in less than 10 chapters in the whole manga! Like I said, I wish I could like her. I really do.

Yuko started to forcibly sell herself at an older age tho. Esemori said Nagi started to sell herself since she was a fkn child to survive alone, meaning it should have happened just months after the earthquake.

Anyways, she didn't cut ties with her uncle, but it happened backwards instead, her uncle, to keep a fanciful life, severed ties with Nagi. Ending as an orphan may have left her with zero self esteem and with an extreme self deppreciation, and pretty much she was taught to obey everything they tell her to do when she started to sell herself for survival.

I feel these posts miss the point a bit. Boy's Abyss is all about variety and everyone reacts to their trauma in unique ways. Yuko went through hell, and chose to drag those around her into it instead of improving her situation. Shiba and Chako were displeased with her lives and were looking to improve it in their own (deluded) way. Nagi seemingly chooses to do neither and just floats in-between. I think it's a fine concept. The absence of an ego is the character itself, and that leaves others to imprint on them. It's similar to Reiji's circumstances purely by coincidence. This is not theorizing by the way. Ryo drew a short story featuring a "fan" of Nagi's who did exactly this.

Now the execution is a very different story. Ryo having Nagi come and go throughout the manga without "doing" much was amateur hour. Definitely among the weakest points of the story. I think the manga Asako does something somewhat similar with Nagi, yet handles it a bit better.

That said, it is highly unlikely that Nagi's current state is just because her parents died in an Earthquake. This is Ryo. There's always a twist that holds the individual more accountable.

Personally, Nagi's been a pleasant person whenever she's been around. Her casual dialogue with the townies in the early chapters gave the impression that she had strong insight. And telling Yuko to go die with Esemori also speaks to her boldness once she gets going. She's passive but in no way meek.

I don't understand the talk on page 20. Was there a mistake? At first they talk about how she doesn't have to sell the house, implying she wants to sell it. But then she says she wants to keep it.
I get how she wants to stay because of Nagi but I don't understand the flow of the discussion.

Yuri became the final boss…I still hope Chako comes back into focus, she was the only “happy” one when the series started, it would be sad to see her perish trapped in the town when she was the one that came up with the plan to leave.

if you guy remember in the beginning of the manga, Nagi say to Reiji that she will take him away from the town since he complaining he can’t leave. It’s not surprising when Nagi don’t want him to be stuck here. It’s make a lot sense running back to him and decided talk to him to convince to leave the shitty place and to go with her to start a better life’s with her.

The secret behind Nagi is definitely more than just losing his parents in the earthquake and being abandoned by his uncle. I always feel that Nagi is always thinking, but I just can't tell what she is thinking.

The next goal of the story is also obvious, to get back Nagi's lost smile. When she gets her smile back, that's when she really takes action.

Kek.

It's Yuko's creepy smile, also look at Reiji's betta, its tail is burning (that represents the tail is rotting, meaning the fish is dying). Not precisely a foreshadowing for a happy end, but more of a visual resume of the volume contents.

Actually, she didn't..... She was in middle school which is roughly the ages of 12 - 15. Yuko had a lot of hardships in her arc. However, the thing I don't understand is why are you defending so hard for Nagi when I just said that I don't blame the character except the writer for not giving her full potential? I even stated all of the characters had had hardships.

Like I said, I wish I could like her. I really do.

1000% this. You took most of the words out of my mouth about the story and the mangaka handles Nagi. You gave a good point in how she acts around the town. I have a little more perspective of Nagi now. Thank you!
I have yet to read more of Ryo's works but will right now.
