Ah, I was wondering if the series would bring this up.

Yeah, it's a nice reminder that traditions that we have seen in many other series, such as "the child has to inherit the family temple", are relatively recent. Heck, the very idea of Buddhist priests marrying and having kids would have been unthinkable centuries ago in Japan, and it's a rare sight in other countries.

The childeren part would have still been possible, bastards and all that being things that happened, by marriage definately not. Of course, the fusion of Japan's shinto beliefs and cosmology compounding with the Buddhism, especially during the time of nationalization of everything really did help give a lot of leeway to the need for progeny, even for "clerical" families
