There's a lot of irony in this chapter, both the situational and the dramatic. The fact she doesn't know that her own son is inadvertently buying a prostitute because of the lack of physical and emotional affection he gets from both his mother. While earlier I was wrong to assume she was intentionally neglecting him, it is true that his mother going to her "job" has lead him to feeling like a pariah and like she doesn't care about him.

but I reread a few chapters and they have different last names. Still, I hope it's revealed who his daughter is because I think that will be interesting.

I think that's intentional as she's either trying to make him into her idealized version of what she thinks a man is whilst she is ignorant to his shortcomings or that he reminds her of his father and that has lead her to placing him on a pedestal which he can't live up to. @justforthelulz

i have some one who was in the same exact situation as her but the only difference she came out alive today with two wonderful daughter who i think as my own sisters. i recently saw it again and read the chapter of "spring" and thought wow this sounds familiar and remembered the numbers ... so sorry again

Doing a little more research, it's eriee but she does show all the signs of a Jocasta Complex

The first one is shown in this chapter with her saying that she thinks her son is the only good man alive

The second is demonstrated by her prostituting herself (even if she doesn't enjoy it) and how handsy she is with him

The third is shown by her forcing her son to take an at-home job instead of "playing with some cats."


Granted, psychoanalysis is only valid for art interpretation and not for any real life phenomena, still it remains kinda eerie how she shows all the signs
