Apparently, both the manga and anime have each a different tone from the novel. Haven't read the novel, but the manga adaptation is heaps better than the anime.

And it seems that it is not a secret at all that the empire is destined to lose the war, the manga has several chapters were future journalists investigate the war, with Tanya's existence apparently being struck from historical records as an extra mystery

At least knowing in advance which stories are good enough allows to heavily filter what you buy and also gives a second chance at discovery of a series you missed entirely

It's not that she doesn't exist, but that there was an erasure of historical records. The journalists find traces of that in their investigation, like the interview of not-Rommel's(that arc is really funny, recommend reading it) wife, as he had already died in the future.
