You do generally have to get some distance out toward the edge to get banned - if you play reasonably nice and remember to steer clear of broadly political topics, you shouldn't have much of anything to worry about.

Nyan and Justice were banned for saying some homophobic things in a certain LGBTQ thread that was created (and then promptly deleted), though Justice ban wasn't permanent but he chose to not come back. Detective was banned for a month(?) because he wouldn't stop talking about the election results from the 2024 presidential election in America, after that he quit MangaDex. Gary was because he wouldn't stop harassing one of the staff. Sterven is just Sterven, he's been banned many times over V3 - V5 because of his pfps and other stuff. Dragon was banned for a month because he and some other users kept harassing another user (that wasn't very liked, mind you), and when he came back he continued to do so so he was permabanned.

I had a grudge on the guy for mass striking me and probably using sockpuppets at the same time. All over a miscommunication where I said something about abuse being cyclical. Good riddance to mr_detective.

In a group of newbies who don't self-loathe...

I got permabanned from reddit for harassment (assuming people weren't lobotomized)
like uh "hey dude stop lying you're relativizing nazi atrocities by labeling a photo of the lviv pogrom as reprisals against french collaborators" so i called him out in his comment and added his username in case he deleted (this probably is what made it harassing and encouraged as such) and counteracted his replies denying the truth ( he used fucking gemini) so i got pissed off and went on the photos description page to get geolocation image (thank goodness the wikipedians are smart) and sent.
Oh another earlier ban for calling incels a waste of oxygen
