Yes. the constant "it's not gay!" "is it gay??" is just queer people insecure of their own queerness ૮-ᆺ- ა
people in the early 2000's were uncomfortable with being attracted to 'em, so the who "they're not gay!" thing started.
even the name "trap" as a way to translate otokonoko is a part of this, with the name coming from the idea that people were being "tricked" into liking them. although, i'll admit that there wasn't a good way to translate it at the time. ૮ -.-ა
But language develops, so today we do have a word we could use, 'femboy', as it's closer to the original meaning of "male daughter"/"male girl". And, as far as i'm aware, no one debates if it's gay, it's just accepted that it is ૮ .ᆺ. ა

Meh, I never really liked the word 'femboy' because of certain circles (that I will not speak of because I will get in trouble) so I use trap instead. I do understand the significance to not use the word for real life people though.
