today's daily reminder post that the Spanish tried to conquer China and strike the Ottomans from behind. This was a real plan.
Spain: Okay, everyone, we're taking China. Go!
China: Uh, what?
Spain: Oh, Christo, there are a bunch of you.
England: Nice Armada. Be a shame if something happened to it.

This is what I call the China effect.
Foreign race conquers China, and then the sheer quantity of Chinese people sinicizes them.

Example:
"Hey China, we're gonna conquer you!" said the Jurchens in Manchuria
"Oh, shucks" said China.
years of gradual migration of the Chinese majority south to the Manchu north
"Hey! Whatever happened to those damn Jurchens?"
"Must've died out or something."

Happened to Normans in england. Also to vikings in rus. Actually kinda everywhere. Conquerors become the ruling elite that adopt the customs of locals. Why make things difficult when you can just say "Hey, its me! Your new mandated god emperor".

I wouldn't say it's a rule of thumb, because in Europe there are examples to the contrary. Hungary, Turkey, and Bulgaria come to mind. They maintained their horde languages and cultures despite the fact that people lived in those areas before. (In the case of Bulgaria and Turkey, Greeks. In the case of Hungary , Slavs.)
