Why did this get mixed reactions

Because people have different opinions and make different choices.
An Undying or Ferryman like Teddy had it set up to receive notifications in e-mails. Why? Idk but sounds ancient unless you really don't want to miss those alerts.
People who want to be very active and a part of the discussions (even if they have work) or people who just like being notified like @athayanezant have notifications on.
Conversely, those who don't really care or do not wish to be bothered have all notifications off unless they never tweaked around the settings.

I have notifications off but alerts on (which is like the default I think?) and check my alerts every time I log in which is like 0–16 times a day. That's because I don't really like most kinds of notifications except for events I am interested in, software updates, irl things (including people I know, education, disaster alerts, etc.) and free stuff in games. And even those are set to be silent most of the time. Why bother getting a heart-attack-inducing sound when I'm gonna look at it soon anyway? There are some things that require my immediate attention so let them have priority. I'm not Klein from Lord of Mysteries who could get an urgent request from a Tarot Club member any moment.
It's just not for me and when I see others getting flooded with notifications it looks irksome. Instead of thinking "Wow, that person there sure is popular. " I think "Must be a lot of work or other things you have to do. " and feel bad for them because I have more first and second hand experience with that.
I'm sure the banana felt anger out of guilt for not being able to protect you. Or maybe you steal his mojo?

Gotta admit looking at alerts can be fun even if the constituents are a bit weird. Like the flashy lights and sounds that come with winning something in gambling engineered to make you feel happy.
But receiving 4 meguuusads in a row for saying a normal or otherwise uninteresting thing makes me go: Are you okay??? Or were you moved that much?.
Woah, are people actually thinking about that one interesting question I asked which challenges the whole narrative? Wait no they just misunderstood some random bullshit I typed half-conscious as some kind of incredibly unoriginal sex joke!
The red dot on the hollow bell beckons you to come closer and closer, it wants you to touch it so it can suck a bit of your energy and infect you in the process! Good luck. It's too late for me...
