@elegant_insanity I know the maid thing started earlier on. It still doesn't clarify what the game is here.
There are four main parties here:
There's Su-and as an extension of her schemes, Shu.
Then there's Liu, who's a schemer, but not nearly as clever of one as she thinks an is falling for the trap at the moment. As an extension of
her schemes, we have the Ninth Prince who may or may not be a lover, but at the very least helped with the koi scheme(with the servant who actually did it and is present as a witness as an extension of that).
Then there's the Emperor who is, frankly, a dipshit that's easily swayed and deceived.
And finally, there's the maid, who betrayed Su as a spy, got sent to Liu as a counter-spy, and is used here as further evidence of infidelity. She's not considered part of anyone's side but her own because her loyalties are a jumbled mess. And it's her side whose motivations I'm confused about.
Is she an unwitting pawn like the Emperor and Koi servant who genuinely didn't know about her involvement with the evidence? Or is she actually working with Su in the conspiracy to bring Liu down? The latter is basically what the prior chapter setup implies-as well as Liu's comment; she's in on the conspiracy out of self-interest and personal love for the Ninth Prince. But if so, her current standing is completely against the idea of self-interest because both her and her loved one's lives are at risk at the moment.
