That wouldn't have been an issue if you didn't drag her away from him or if he didn't stay behind!
That's a large group of enemies, perfect for her magic, even if it can't be controlled. The way I see it, he's the one that's just getting in the way.

@versub It certainly looked that way when he smacked the goblin earlier. If it has been just a sword, the goblin would have been heavily wounded, but since it was a sword covered by a mass of water, the goblin only got a nice wash. I guess all the knights were taught to cover their sword with their particular elemental affinity magic, regardless of it's useful or not. Against some fire element opponent the sword+water ought to be good, but not necessarily against most other types, unless he only splashes water into their eyes for distraction.

Water wrapping the sword can help is if it is moving REALLY fast around the blade to make an additional water blade. Alternatively, it's motion could really screw with attempts to parry and could help deflect attacks. @Kaarme it's not like water is solid so it shouldn't be interfering with contact, so it is VERY odd that the goblin wasn't cut at all.

@monkey123 Correction: She couldn't deal with one goblin that caught her off-guard, in close combat, when she isn't used to fighting. Here, she's a distance away, with a bunch of monsters in the distance, and the only reason she can't cast magic nukes at the mob is because everyone else got in the way.

@monkey123 That's why she's a distance away. You can't backstab someone that's 10 meters away while facing you with knights all around her. That's why she couldn't do anything before, but will be able to now. Unless the goblins had bows or slings or something I didn't see before, this should've been an easy clear.

@icarushector I'd agree with you, save for one thing: We already witnessed the result. Normally you'd think the water would act like a water jet, able to cut even stone and metals if given time, but as it is, we already saw with the goblin incident it produced no good results. Rather, it seemed to make the blade even less efficient. So, either the water is static or it's flowing very slowly. It's basically like a pocket of water telikinetically held around the blade. It only serves to soften the blow or extinguish fire.
It's pretty safe to say the author of this manga (or is this based on a novel?) can write cute things but action clearly isn't his (I think it's he) forte.

Dude, that first goblin just popped out of no were and surprised her so, startled, she back stepped, tripped and fell onto her but and couldn’t do anything out of fear. If you we facing a belligerent, violent monster larger than you, you might do the same thing, even magically endowed.
However, the second time, she was prepared for it, and could have taken out the entire horde in one fell swoop. If only that idiot who can’t even scratch, let alone kill a goblin after hitting it twice with a magically enhanced sword, hadn’t ran straight at the horde, putting him in the line of fire. Not to mention, MC seems to have left her staff back at the watering hole or wherever.

That would likely be the case if it's this world where conflicts, deaths and wars are far from people's minds and one can grow to adulthood without seeing any violence for even once in their lives.
However, this is a world where monsters exist and attacks people regularly. It is a world where you can be easily killed within the next step. So that justification wouldn't fly. You wouldn't be able to live in that world if you can't expect or stomach violence. A child her age in that world and locale would've likely even slaughtered or watched slaughtering of animals many times already.
